Pregnancy is a unique experience, and while every woman’s body responds differently, there are several common signs that might indicate you’re expecting—and recognizing these symptoms will help you know when to take a pregnancy test.

Here are the top seven symptoms of pregnancy:

1. Missed Period

A missed period is often the earliest and most significant sign of pregnancy, especially if your cycle is regular. If you’re late or skip your period altogether, this could be a strong indication that you’re pregnant. However, other factors such as stress or hormonal imbalances can also cause missed periods—which is why it’s critical to take a pregnancy test if you believe you’ve missed your period.

2. Nausea with/without Vomiting

Nausea, commonly known as morning sickness, can occur as early as two weeks after conception. Despite its name, morning sickness can happen at any time of day or night. It’s usually triggered by rising hormone levels, particularly human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and estrogen.

3. Breast Changes

Tender, swollen, or sensitive breasts are another common early pregnancy symptom. You may notice that your breasts feel heavier or fuller, and the area around your nipples (areolas) may darken. These changes are due to hormonal shifts that prepare your body for breastfeeding.

4. Fatigue

Feeling unusually tired is a common early pregnancy symptom. The hormone progesterone rises rapidly in early pregnancy, which can make you feel fatigued and in need of more rest than usual. Furthermore, if you’re feeling stressed or anxious, this can amplify your fatigue and make it seem worse.

5. Frequent Urination

As pregnancy progresses, the body increases blood flow to the kidneys, causing you to urinate more frequently. This symptom can start as early as the first few weeks of pregnancy and continue throughout.

6. Food Aversions and Cravings

Hormonal changes during pregnancy can alter your sense of taste and smell, leading to sudden food aversions or intense cravings. You might find that foods you once enjoyed now seem unappealing or that you crave unusual combinations.

7. Mood Swings

Fluctuating hormones in early pregnancy can affect your emotions, leading to mood swings, increased irritability, or heightened sensitivity. It’s common to experience a wide range of feelings in a short amount of time.
