Whether you’re about to take a pregnancy test or wondering if it’s time to go grab one from the store, it’s important to understand exactly how and why they are able to detect a pregnancy.

How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?

In order to detect a pregnancy, pregnancy tests use a urine sample to measure for the pregnancy hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). HCG is a hormonal chemical developed by trophoblast tissue, which is found in early embryos.

How Do I Get an Accurate Pregnancy Test Result?

In order to get an accurate pregnancy test result, it’s recommended that you take the following steps:

  • Carefully follow the instructions on the box
  • Wait at least one week after a missed period
  • Take the test first thing in the morning before drinking any liquids
  • Ensure that the test has not expired

For the most accurate results, we recommend you take a medical-grade pregnancy test in a professional setting. We offer these at Assure Women’s Center. With registered nurses on staff, you can be sure of your test result. After your test, we will go over your results with you and help you determine the next best steps, and whether you qualify for an ultrasound.

What Does a Positive Pregnancy Test Mean?

You would think a positive pregnancy test means that your pregnancy is progressing. However, that’s not always the case. A positive pregnancy test does not always indicate a viable pregnancy. Once you receive a positive test, you’ll need to take a few additional steps to learn more about your pregnancy.

In some cases, a fertilized egg will implant and develop outside of the uterus. This is called an ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancies will not develop into a baby and can be extremely dangerous if left untreated. In order to determine the viability of your pregnancy, you’ll need to access an ultrasound scan.

While pregnancy tests are a great first step, ultrasound scans are the only way to confirm your pregnancy is viable and progressing. The results of your ultrasound scan will help you and your doctor determine how far along you are and your available pregnancy options.
