I’m Pregnant, and My Partner Is Abusive
If you’re pregnant and your partner is abusive, it’s critical to know that your safety is the top priority.
If you’re in immediate danger, call the National Domestic Abuse Hotline at 800.799.SAFE (7233). Or, if you need someone to talk to, contact Assure Women’s Center to connect with one of our team members.
Being pregnant with an abusive partner can be scary and cause a lot of unknowns, but there are steps you can take to help ensure your safety.
Having an abusive partner is often emotionally complex. Maybe your partner isn’t abusive all of the time, and you hold on to the hope that things will get better. Or maybe your partner is abusive most of the time, but you depend on them for housing, food, etc., and don’t know how to leave.
No matter what you’re feeling, your emotions and experiences are valid and understandable. However, it’s essential that you take steps to ensure you stay safe.
The first step toward staying safe is securing a place to stay that is beyond your partner’s reach. If you are currently living with your partner, this means moving out so that you can be far away from the abuse. While this is easier said than done, Assure Women’s Center is here to help. We can assist you with community referrals to find affordable housing.
If you are not living with your partner, but he is coming to your house to harass you, getting a restraining order can be an essential way to protect yourself. Contact your local police department to learn more about this process.
Along with removing yourself from a potentially dangerous living situation, it’s important not to be alone with your partner.
If you must see your partner, meet in a public place to ensure that he can’t become abusive.
Being pregnant can make you feel incredibly vulnerable, and you might be tempted to stay with your partner because you don’t want to face the pregnancy alone.
However, it’s critical to evaluate your relationship with your partner. You deserve to be in a healthy, safe relationship. If your partner is threatening your health and safety in any way, you owe it to yourself to get away from the relationship.
Facing a pregnancy without your partner can feel lonely, but you’re not alone in this. At Assure, we are both here for you and can connect you to local resources to help you feel confident, safe, and healthy—apart from your partner.
