Why Does an Ultrasound Matter if I’m Considering Abortion?
An ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to show real-time images of the inside of the body. It has several applications, but it is commonly associated with pregnancy.
Pregnancy ultrasounds have been a game-changer for women’s health over the last 60+ years. They offer a way for health professionals to take a look inside the uterus and monitor pregnancy development.
Before an abortion, this step is key to understanding your pregnancy details and safeguarding your health. We at Assure Women’s Center can help with no-cost pregnancy testing and limited ultrasounds.
An ultrasound machine consists of a computer monitor and a handheld device called a transducer. The transducer slides over the skin (usually covered in gel) and transmits sound waves into the body.
The sound waves bounce off internal structures and create echoes that return to the transducer, which converts the echoes into electrical signals. A computer then converts the electrical signals into real-time imagery displayed on a screen. All of this happens very quickly.
Early ultrasounds answer three key pregnancy questions:
The answers to these questions will play a role in your decision-making and safeguarding your health.
For instance, if the pregnancy is located outside your uterus, it means it is an ectopic pregnancy—a non-viable pregnancy requiring immediate medical attention. If the ultrasound cannot find a heartbeat, you may have miscarried and could require treatment.
It’s critical to note that abortion does not make sense for a miscarriage, and it will not treat an ectopic pregnancy. Both of these situations will take you down a different path and require medical treatment.
