Early pregnancy symptoms vary from person to person. Some women notice changes within days of conception, while others experience few or no symptoms. Understanding what these signs indicate and what they cannot tell you on their own is an important first step in confirming a pregnancy.

Assure Women’s Center provides no-cost, confidential pregnancy testing and ultrasounds.

What Causes Early Pregnancy Symptoms

Early pregnancy symptoms are largely driven by hormonal changes following implantation. As levels of hCG and progesterone rise, the body begins responding in ways that produce recognizable physical changes.

Common Pregnancy Symptoms to Recognize

The following symptoms are frequently reported in early pregnancy:

  • Missed Period: A missed period is often the first indicator of a possible pregnancy. However, a missed or delayed period can also result from stress, changes in weight, illness, or hormonal fluctuation unrelated to pregnancy.
  • Nausea or Vomiting: Commonly referred to as morning sickness, nausea can occur at any time of day and typically begins within the first few weeks after conception.
  • Breast Changes: Tenderness, swelling, or increased sensitivity in the breasts is a common early response to rising hormone levels.
  • Fatigue: Elevated progesterone levels can cause significant fatigue, often disproportionate to a person’s level of physical activity.
  • Frequent Urination: Increased blood flow to the kidneys during early pregnancy often results in more frequent urination.
  • Implantation Bleeding: Light spotting may occur when a fertilized egg implants in the uterine wall. This is often mistaken for a light period.
  • Digestive Changes: Bloating, mild cramping, nausea, food aversions, or heightened sensitivity to smells are commonly reported in the first trimester.
  • Mood Changes: Hormonal shifts in early pregnancy can contribute to mood variability.

When Symptoms Are Not Enough

Many of the symptoms above can be associated with other conditions. Clinical testing is necessary to confirm a pregnancy.

A pregnancy test detects hCG and provides an initial indication of pregnancy. If the result is positive, an ultrasound is the recommended next step. An ultrasound determines gestational age, confirms the location of the pregnancy, and assesses viability by detecting cardiac activity.

Location is particularly important to confirm. An ectopic pregnancy, in which implantation occurs outside the uterus, is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment and cannot be addressed through abortion.

Because approximately 1 in 4 recognized pregnancies end in miscarriage, pregnancy symptoms may persist even when a pregnancy is no longer developing. An ultrasound provides the only accurate assessment of the pregnancy status.
