Rather than experiencing the “most wonderful time of the year,” facing the holidays with an unexpected pregnancy can be “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” Nosy relatives, pregnancy symptoms, and an uncertain future can make it overwhelming.

We have some tips to help you. Being kind to yourself, drawing your boundaries, and making healthy choices can help you enjoy this special holiday season.

Have You Announced Your Pregnancy?

Holiday family gatherings often bring conversations about your plans for the new year. If you haven’t announced your pregnancy or have only told a few select people, you may want to hold off for a while.

Experts estimate that as many as 26% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage, and 80% of those are in the first trimester (12 weeks). Because of this reason, many women wait to tell others about their pregnancies until after the first trimester.

If you haven’t determined how you’re going to handle your unexpected pregnancy, you may also want to wait. Everyone will have an opinion once they find out. Unless you’re eager to hear everyone’s suggestions, waiting to tell is your best plan.

Draw Boundaries

For those who are aware of your pregnancy, remind them that it is your story to share, not theirs. Feel free to redirect a conversation if needed. Practice responding with, “I’m focusing on enjoying the holidays right now,” to keep your boundaries clear.

Know your limits. If you feel overwhelmed, consider bowing out of family gatherings and parties without needing to give an excuse. The holidays can be exhausting enough without the added physical and emotional pressure of pregnancy.

Find Yourself an Ally

Identify a trusted friend or family member with whom you feel comfortable discussing your situation. Ask them to stick close to you during get-togethers. They can be the ones to deflect the many questions others have.

Be Aware of Your Pregnancy Symptoms

Every woman experiences pregnancy differently. Some individuals feel every symptom immediately, while others may not experience any symptoms for weeks or months. No one can predict how you will feel.

Early pregnancy symptoms that may affect your holiday enjoyment include fatigue, moodiness, food aversions, and morning sickness. Unfortunately, morning sickness can occur at any time, day or night.

Practice Self-Care

Even if this time of year doesn’t feel wonderful, try to do things that you love. Watch your favorite Christmas movie, bake cookies, relax with friends, or get creative with decorating.

Holiday indulgences are tempting, but prioritize your well-being by eating balanced meals, staying hydrated, and avoiding substances like alcohol.

Take time to rest and put your feet up. Something as simple as lighting a holiday candle can make all the difference.
