What Are there Risks to Ordering the Abortion Pill Online?
COVID-19 has lulled us into thinking everything should be done through the internet. From work to grocery shopping, the pandemic has locked us behind our doors and kept us from meeting face-to-face. Isn’t that okay?
When making major medical decisions, it isn’t okay. Getting a thorough check-up and meeting one-on-one with a doctor who’s aware of your physical, mental, and emotional health history is the safest plan of action.
What about when it comes to abortion? Is it safe to order the abortion pill through the internet?
The abortion pill method isn’t just one pill and your abortion is over. It’s two very powerful drugs taken over a 24 – 48 hour period.
The first drug is called Mifeprex (mifepristone). Your pregnancy needs a hormone called progesterone to thrive and grow. Mifeprex is a drug that blocks progesterone so the pregnancy can no longer continue. Due to its strength, Mifeprex is highly regulated in the U.S.
The second drug, misoprostol, causes contractions to remove the pregnancy tissue from your body. You can expect heavy vaginal bleeding and cramping as you pass the tissue.
Maybe you’re afraid someone will find out or you don’t have direct access to an abortion clinic, so you decide to order the abortion pill method online. Before you do, read about the three main risks.
The FDA is very clear about the dangers of Mifeprex. They state the drug should only be dispensed by healthcare providers who meet certain qualifications.
Mifeprex has special safety restrictions on when it should be distributed too. Do not use the abortion pill method after you’ve been pregnant for more than 70 days from the first day of your last menstrual cycle. Taking the drugs after this date could result in a failed abortion, infection, heavy blood loss, and severe cramping.
The FDA says this about ordering Mifeprex online “Mifeprex has special safety restrictions…drugs purchased from foreign Internet sources are not the FDA-approved versions of the drugs, and they are not subject to FDA-regulated manufacturing controls or FDA inspection of manufacturing facilities.”
The bottom line is the abortion pills you order online might have ingredients that could be contaminated or an incorrect dosage. If the drugs are ineffective and your abortion isn’t complete, it could pose a major threat to your reproductive health.
Without the oversight of a healthcare provider, you’re on your own to determine if the abortion is going according to the instructions or you’re having complications.
The drugs tend to cause nausea. If you vomit, how will you know if they worked? How much bleeding is considered severe enough you need to go to the emergency room? The process needs to have someone taking care of you.
