Knowing you’re unexpectedly pregnant is one thing. Saying it out loud is another. Whether you’re worried about your boyfriend’s reaction, your parents’, or both, the fear of how someone will respond can sometimes feel heavier than the news itself.

You don’t have to walk into those conversations unprepared. Schedule a free, confidential appointment at Assure Women’s Center first. Talking through your situation before you tell anyone else can help you feel more grounded going in.

Before You Tell Anyone

If you haven’t already confirmed your pregnancy with an ultrasound, that’s a practical first step. An ultrasound tells you whether the pregnancy is located in your uterus, how far along you are, and whether the pregnancy is progressing.

This information will likely come up in the conversations ahead, and having it keeps you from fielding questions you can’t answer yet. It can also help safeguard your health and safety by identifying whether any follow-up medical care may be needed.

Assure Women’s Center offers pregnancy tests administered by our licensed medical staff, along with limited ultrasounds, at no cost.

Telling Your Boyfriend

Pick a time when he isn’t rushed or distracted. A private setting usually works better than a public one, unless you have concerns about his reaction.

If you do have concerns, trust that instinct. Consider telling him by phone, with a trusted friend nearby, or in a public place where you feel safe. You know your situation better than anyone.

If you are in a relationship where you have experienced threats, controlling behavior, or any form of abuse, your safety comes before this conversation. Contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-SAFE (7233) for confidential support, available 24/7.

Telling Your Family

Family reactions to unexpected news vary, and first reactions are not always the final ones. Shock, silence, or a sharp response in the moment doesn’t necessarily reflect how someone will show up for you over time.

Give the people closest to you some room to process. You needed time with this news too.

If you aren’t sure where to begin, something simple and direct works: “I have something important to tell you, and I need you to hear me out.”

You Don’t Have to Figure Out the Words Alone

Our medical staff can talk through your options with you and help you feel more prepared before you have these conversations. Services are free and confidential.
